The first coffee tree on Liberty Island was grown by Jose Antonio Gelabert in 1748. However, large-scale production began only at the end of the 18th century, when French colonists who fled from the Haitian revolution planted coffee trees brought with them in the Sierra Maestra area - a mountain range in the southeast of the country. Today, 92% of Cuban coffee is grown in the Sierra Maestra mountains.
